We Test in Soy

What does this mean?

When Bitter Creek North (WI) first went into business, paraffin candles were the standard. But since we began to sell EZ Soy in 2002, soy candles have been on the rise and becoming more and more popular in the market place! So we started testing all new fragrances in EZ Soy to ensure the best scent throw in this popular type of wax.

When we test new fragrances, we use our EZ Soy container wax and test at only 1 ounce per pound (approx. 6%) and we test burn in a medium sized jar (8oz jelly jars). Several of us evaluate and rate the scent throw in our office, as well as having our tech support staff member test burn one in a different building for evaluation. Many times we also send out samples to customers for testing as well, just to make sure.
If a fragrance doesn't pass our tests and throw strongly at only 1 ounce per pound, then we reject it! Most other companies test at 1.5 oz per pound (9%), so we test at 1 oz to ensure that we are offering you the strongest throw for your money!

Remember also that not all soy waxes are the same, so some scents may throw better in one brand of soy than they do in others. Also take into account that different people have different senses of smell, so it's always best to test for yourself and decide instead of relying completely on someone else's judgement! Don't forget that soy candles need time to cure before test burning, usually 2 weeks is recommended for optimum results. Some scents will cure faster than others, but many will get better with age. So if you get impatient and can't wait to burn, don't give up until you try it again a couple weeks later... you may end up loving it! Test burn in a room that is moderately sized for your candle... testing in a very large or very small room may give you unrealistic results. Also make sure there are no other smells interfering, and make sure your nose is clear (get out of the house for awhile, open a window and air it out, or sniff some coffee grounds). It's also a good idea to get a second opinion, so give a test candle to a friend to test for you too!

We appreciate your feedback! If you've tested any of our fragrances in soy we would love to hear your results so we can share them on our website!

Sincerely,
Rich Hansen - Owner
